State legislators need your professional insights on oral health issues
in Arizona—you can now meet them face-to-face

AzDA's Oral Health Day at the Capitol, Feb 8, 2018

Last year we were able to thwart the Pew Foundation’s effort to create dental therapists, but this year we are facing a bigger fight.  The Dental Therapy Sunrise passed out of the Health Committee of Reference by a vote of 5-4 and a Bill is being drafted that will start to move through the Legislative process in the coming weeks.

Together we need to keep the pressure on against dental therapists; and support our efforts to get dental coverage in AHCCCS for pregnant mothers.

This year’s Hot Topics:

  • The Pew Foundation is not giving up and has recruited an interesting cast of allies including the Goldwater Institute, which insists that dental therapists are the “free market” answer to Arizona’s access to care issues and will lower the cost of dental care. Member of the State Legislature need to hear from all of you on the front lines of providing care to our fellow citizens.
  • Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Yee, along with a good number of bipartisan co-sponsors is introducing Legislation to establish dental coverage for pregnant mothers.  We all know that taking better care of mothers leads to improved pregnancy outcomes and healthier children. AzDA is joining with a broad coalition including the March of Dimes, the Alliance of Community Health Centers, the Arizona Public Health Association and the Arizona Dental Hygienists Association to support this Legislation.

The day will include a visit to a meeting of the House Health Committee and our group’s introduction to the members of the House and Senate.  We will be wrapping this thing up by 2 PM. Dental students from both dental schools will be joining us and will be partnered with at least one dentist.
