Course Description
Upon completion of this intensive course in oral conscious sedation techniques, participants should be able to:
- Describe the adult and pediatric anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular and central nervous systems as they relate to oral conscious sedation;
- Describe the pharmacological effects of drugs used in enteral sedation;
- Describe the methods of obtaining a medical history and conduct an appropriate physical examination;
- Use this information clinically for ASA classification and risk assessment;
- Choose the most appropriate technique for the individual patient;
- Use appropriate physiological monitoring equipment;
- List and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of enteral sedation;
- List and discuss the indications and contraindications of inhalation sedation;
- Discuss the prevention, recognition and management of these complications;
- List and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of enteral and/or combination inhalation-enteral conscious sedation (combined conscious sedation);
- Describe a protocol for management of emergencies in the dental office and list and discuss the emergency drugs and equipment required for management of life-threatening situations;
- Discuss the pharmacological effects of combined drug therapy, their implications and their management.
Several actual case scenarios will be observed.
As of May 1, 2004 every dentist shall possess a Section 1303 Permit issued by the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners before inducing oral conscious sedation on an outpatient basis. The Section 1303 CE offered by the Arizona Dental Association will qualify a dentist to apply for the permit. About Our Speakers
Dr. Richard Kraut is Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Program Director of the Dental Implants Section for Montefiore Medical Center Department of Dentistry, New York.
Dr. Morton Rosenberg is Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and head of the Division of Pain Control and Anesthesia at Tufts University’s School of Dental Medicine, Boston.
Steps to Obtaining a Section 1303 Permit
Complete 18 hours of sedation training including video observation at this course.
Complete 6 hours of Pharmacology CE (AzDA course: 2009 Western Regional Dental Convention).
Complete 6 hours of Medical Emergencies CE (AzDA course: 2009 Western Regional Dental Convention).
Complete 3 hours of CPR (AzDA course: monthly in Scottsdale and Western Regional Dental Convention March 12-14, 2009).
Submit your application and written compliance of all requirements to the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners (BODEX).
Schedule an on-site evaluation with BODEX.
These courses are recommended as part of the 30-hour training requirement. Individual applicants may have already completed hours in certain areas of the required training within the last five years.
